Summer is almost here, and we have the pools to prove it

Facebook Like Button  Those of us in western Oregon may not have broken free from the rainy days just yet, but summer is nearly upon us. We promise.

One of the annual signs of summer's arrival is the opening of our two outdoor aquatic facilities, Raleigh and Somerset West.

This year, that will happen on Monday, June 20. To learn more about THPRD's two outdoor pools, as well as the outdoor wading pool at Sunset Swim Center, click the links below.

Facebook Like Button   THRPD's 2011 Summer Concert and Theater in the Park series has been unveiled. It features a couple of big hits from 2010, and a new season-ending Summer Celebration Concert on Saturday, Aug. 13, at the Park District's main recreation complex on 158th and Walker Road.

The concert finale, a first for the district, is a date-night event, geared for adults. Food and alcohol will be for sale, but as is the case with all THPRD concerts, no alcohol will be allowed from the outside. The night's featured performer will be legendary Portland blues and soul singer Curtis Salgado.

Long-time Portland favorite Quarterflash (pictured) will kick things off on Thursday, July 7, at Garden Home Park. GruVbox, a high-energy performance band from Seattle and a huge success from the 2010 schedule, will perform on Sunday, July 10, at Center Street Park.

Facebook Like Button  Party in the Park, the district's largest, free annual event of the summer, is Saturday, July 30.

There are a couple of significant changes that should make the sixth annual event more enjoyable than ever. Most of the events now begin at noon and run through 6 p.m., allowing families more time to enjoy the festivities. Also, for the first time ever, THPRD will join forces with the City of Beaverton to showcase the diversity of the community with the Beaverton International Celebration.

As always, Party in the Park will feature the Classic at T-Hills car show , which gets things rolling at 8:30 a.m. and continues until 4 p.m. That will be followed by the Family Triathlon (entry fee) at 10 a.m. Other activities include giant, inflatable play structures, climbing walls, arts and crafts, face painting and the always-popular K-9 Unit demonstration by the Beaverton Police Department.  >> Read more

THPRD, cycling group to remodel, maintain bike course at Eichler Park

Facebook Like Button   THPRD and the Northwest Trail Alliance (NWTA) are joining forces to remodel and maintain the BMX bike course at Eichler Park, located at 13710 SW Farmington Rd. in Beaverton.

With the growth of the sport locally, THPRD and NWTA are looking to design a better course that can be used by novices as well as highly skilled bikers. To that end, the Park District and NWTA reached an agreement in April 2011 that will allow the group to design, build and maintain the bike course permanently.

NWTA has already started renovation of the bike course but is seeking community volunteers to continue the work on the course. A work day is scheduled for June 11. The group is hoping to have the course ready for public use this summer.  >> Read more
